Microsoft 365 LTI 1.3 Integration Guide

Microsoft 365 LTI connects Microsoft learning tools with Schoolbox. Schools can make Microsoft tools available from a page, create collaborative documents in a class, and use Microsoft Teams Assignments through Schoolbox 3rd Party Assessments.

This guide is for Schoolbox Superusers working with their Microsoft 365 administrator.

The Microsoft LTI integration allows for multiple use cases within Schoolbox. Choose the options your school needs (explained below)

Configure only the options your school intends to support. Use these names consistently in Schoolbox, the Microsoft registration portal, training material and screenshots so that staff understand their purpose and function.

Important: Microsoft has replaced its classic OneDrive, OneNote, Teams Assignments and Reflect LTI apps with Microsoft 365 LTI. If your school still uses a classic Microsoft LTI app or existing classic content links, review Microsoft’s current migration guidance before changing or removing the legacy tool.

Before configuring Microsoft 365 LTI, prepare:

• a Schoolbox Superuser whose LTI launch includes an LMS administrator role (The Superuser account in Schoolbox has the email address of the Microsoft System Admin at your school)
• a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator to provide tenant consent;
• access to Administration > LMS > LTI Tools in Schoolbox;
• access to the school’s Microsoft 365 LTI registrations;
• a pilot class with a teacher and at least two student test accounts;
• a decision about which Microsoft 365 LTI options to provide; and
• a decision about whether Microsoft 365 LTI may create Teams.

Check user identities

The email identity supplied by Schoolbox must match the user’s Microsoft Entra user principal name (UPN) or primary email. Verify this for administrators, teachers and students who will use the integration.

Schoolbox administrator check: Confirm whether your instance supplies the user’s Email or Alternate Email value to Microsoft and correct any mismatches before rollout.

Decide whether Microsoft 365 LTI may create Teams

If Schoolbox is the main entry point to Microsoft learning tools, or the school already provisions Teams through another process, use the following recommended starting configuration:

• Teachers can create teams: Off
• Automatically create a team for the course: Off

Enable Team creation only after the school has selected one primary Teams provisioning method and agreed on ownership, membership and lifecycle responsibilities. Microsoft states that Microsoft 365 LTI Team sync creates a Unified Group and Team rather than an Education Class Team. Disabling Team creation does not disable the Assignments, OneDrive or OneNote tools - these remain available within the Schoolbox experience.

Complete this process when Microsoft 365 LTI has not been registered for your Schoolbox instance, or when you are adding a new Schoolbox/Microsoft tool that requires its own registration.

1. Open the Microsoft LMS Gateway and go to the registration portal.
2. Select Add new registration.
3. Select Microsoft 365 LTI, then select Other as the LMS platform.
4. Give the registration a recognisable name that matches the Schoolbox tool.
5. Keep the Microsoft registration portal open in a separate browser tab.
6. In Schoolbox, go to Administration > LMS > LTI Tools and select +.
7. Enter the recommended tool name and select Version 1.3.
8. Copy the Microsoft registration values into Schoolbox using the first table below.
9. Apply the option-specific Launch URL, Deep Linking URL, Availability and Target from the relevant configuration text box.
10. Select Create Tool to save the Schoolbox configuration and generate its Client/Deployment ID.
11. Copy the Schoolbox instance values into the Microsoft registration using the second table below.
12. Review and save the Microsoft registration.
13. Complete consent and first-time configuration.

Microsoft 365 LTI uses Deep Linking, Names and Roles Provisioning Service (NRPS), and Assignment and Grade Services (AGS). The integration also needs the launching user’s name and matching email. Confirm that these capabilities are enabled for your Schoolbox deployment.

Complete first-time configuration

1. As the Schoolbox LMS administrator, open a controlled pilot/test class.
2. From the page actions select "+" and add Embed Learning Tool and launch Microsoft Tools using Basic Launch.
3. Review Microsoft’s terms and requested permissions.
4. Have a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator provide tenant consent. If this is a different person, send them the Admin consent URL displayed by Microsoft or direct them to Microsoft 365 LTI consent.
5. In Microsoft’s Admin Settings, select which applications are Enabled and which are On by default.
6. Apply the school’s Team-creation decision.
7. Save the configuration.

The Schoolbox LMS administrator and the Microsoft 365 Global Administrator may be different people. The Schoolbox launch must include a supported LMS administrator role for the Microsoft first-time configuration to appear.

Test before school-wide rollout

Use this process when the Microsoft registrations already exist and you only need to apply revised Schoolbox configurations.

1. Go to Administration > LMS > LTI Tools.
2. Record the current configuration for each Microsoft tool before making changes.
3. Confirm that the existing Microsoft registrations remain valid.
4. Update the Schoolbox Name, Launch URL, Deep Linking URL, Availability and Target using the option-specific instructions in this guide.
5. Keep the existing registration-specific OpenID Connect Initiation URL, JSON Web Key Set URL, Additional Redirect URL and Client/Deployment ID.
6. Save each updated Schoolbox tool.
7. Test existing content as well as newly created content before rolling the change out to schools.

Do not copy registration values from screenshots. The initiation URL, redirect URL, instance URLs and Client/Deployment ID identify a particular registration and Schoolbox instance.

Changing the Schoolbox fields documented above should not require the matching Microsoft registration to be recreated. If you are adding a new Schoolbox tool rather than updating an existing one, follow the new-deployment process.

Use Microsoft Tools to give staff and students access to the Microsoft experiences enabled for the school and class.

Add Microsoft Tools to a page

1. Open the class or homepage where the tool will be available.
2. Add an Embed Learning Tool component.
3. Select Microsoft Tools.
4. Select Basic Launch.
5. Save the component.
6. Confirm that the intended Microsoft applications appear for a teacher and a student.

The applications shown depend on the deployment settings and course visibility. An administrator controls which applications are enabled; instructors may control the visibility of enabled applications for their course.


 

Use Microsoft Collaborative Documents to create or select a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file that class members can edit together.

Add a collaborative document to a page

1. Open the class page where the document will be available.
2. Add an Embed Learning Tool component.
3. Select Microsoft Collaborative Documents.
4. Select Picker.
5. Create a blank supported document or select an existing supported document.
6. Save the component.
7. Verify that the intended teachers and students can open and edit the document.

Microsoft currently documents a maximum of 250 members for a collaboration. Student ability to create the component also depends on Schoolbox page-editing permissions.

Note: A collaborative document is shared editable work. Use the optional OneDrive resource picker when the intended result is a read-only file rather than collaborative editing.


 

Use Microsoft Teams Assignments to add a Microsoft assignment to a Schoolbox assessment and return supported grades to Schoolbox.

Add a Microsoft assignment

1. Create or edit a Schoolbox assessment.
2. Select the Third Party Assessment workflow.
3. Select Microsoft Teams Assignments.
4. Create or select the Microsoft assignment.
5. Save the assessment.
6. Test the student launch, completion and submission process.
7. Return a test grade and confirm that the correct score and supported feedback appear in Schoolbox.

Create a separate OneDrive resource picker only when the school needs teachers to link or embed read-only files on a page. Keep this workflow distinct from collaborative documents.

The linked or embedded file is read-only for students and teachers in the class. Test link and embed behaviour in the supported Schoolbox browsers before recommending this configuration.

Configuration correction: Use shared-item with a hyphen. Do not use shareditem.


 

Complete first-time configuration

Test before school-wide rollout

Record limitations and failed cases before describing the configuration as recommended best practice.

When M365 groups and classes are automatically created through the Microsoft and Schoolbox LTI integration, schools have several options for managing their ongoing lifecycle and eventual clean-up.

To streamline this process, you can align your M365 group management with the standard Schoolbox class page archiving process that your school runs at the end of a term, semester or academic year.
