Release 13.5 Introduction

Alaress is proud to announce release 13.5 of Schoolbox on the 8th of November. This major update contains many changes and improvements that we have been working on over the last 6 months.

During this update we have appointed a new lead developer, Amri who is now heading up all the changes in the system. Internally the focus of this update was to continue the migration to a proper object model and improve our code testing to minimise issues. Externally we have added two major features the social stream and the course builder.

The course builder will be particularly useful for teachers that like structured and organised information in their LMS. It will keep track of student progress and allow you to plan and timeline tasks ahead of schedule and even import from previous years. On the other hand the social stream is great for adhoc teaching. Engaging your students in online discussions and collaboration that happen spontaneously.

For those that like stats, we completed the following for this release; we resolved 226 issues, altered 2840 files and committed 121386 lines of code.

Major Features

Course Builder

The stalwart of a traditional LMS is the course builder. This function allows you to create structured courses with tasks, quizzes and assessments to be completed. These courses are created in your existing faculty page area so they can be reused by multiple staff over many years. At the start of the year teachers can then subscribe to the course and automatically have all the tasks, due work and quizzes added to their class page.

Utilising features like self-assessment and automated marking students progress can be tracked and monitored allowing teachers to adapt their program to the current progress of their students. The course can be altered for each individual class if required, adding or removing tasks that are no longer required.

In typical Schoolbox style we have made the courses very basic and flexible so they can be adapted to your requirements. A course at its most basic is made up of a course homepage and units. These units can be topics, lessons or chapters of study. Each unit is made up of a homepage with related content, handouts and materials. It also contains the tasks that students must complete in order to finish the unit.

A class page can import many courses made up of multiple optional units. Each unit is given a time period on import and students can only see the tasks required during the active time period. This will allow teachers to control when and what is studied on their class page at any given time.

Social Stream

Following feedback from our users that a more social experience was beneficial to the learning experience we have developed the social stream. The social stream component can be added to any homepage. This component will allow your students and teachers to post resources directly to the class page. Resources can be links, videos, files or even just comments. There is also support for threaded discussion so people can comment to each other.

The system has been designed to dynamically detect the resources you are posting and adapt the output. So for example if a Youtube link is posted it will automatically embed the Youtube video into your social stream.

 

 

New Marksheet

To support our new continuous report card that was part of the last update we needed to help teachers to maintain and monitor student grades. The new marksheet adds the ability to maintain weighted grading and also monitor grade statistics. Unfortunately in upgrading the readability we had to remove the ability to update grades inline. It was just getting too complicated to allow both grade management and viewing in the one form. In order to update grades you will now need to visit the due work page where you can mark, comment and return files for that particular item.

Shared Assessments

In the past all due work was linked directly to the teacher that created the work. As of 13.5 due work is automatically shared between teachers. This will allow teachers to see marks, update marks and modify due work set by other teachers. In order to see and update marks for a class you just need write access to the page. Please be aware of the security implications of this change and ensure students do not have write access to any class pages. We hope this change will assist with multiple teacher classes, large cohort assessments and sharing of grade data across classes.

Parent Access on Mobile

When we announced mobile in the last update many users immediately requested we add improved support specifically for parents. Along with several other improvements to mobile, parents can now view their students due work, timetables and calendar. As always parents can also view news and calendars specifically for them on all mobile devices.

Storage Usage Reports

As the use of Schoolbox has grown across schools and with the advent of video storage, Schoolbox is now using more storage than ever. To provide transparency to systems administrators we have developed these reports to enable you to see exactly who and what is using the storage in Schoolbox.

• Added comments onto student grade card, teachers, students and parents can now comment on the grade card. Notifications are automatically sent to parents, students and teacher when comments are made.
