Configuring Grade Page Filters

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

You can use the available filters to modify what is shown on the Grades page, for example, you could choose “weighted” and “due work” as an option, so parents and students will only see grades for the items that fall within those criteria.

Information on the Grades page can be filtered by assessment type, weighting or work type, but please note that the options available to you will depend on your school’s setting.

Class Grade Average Graph

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

The grade average graph displays where a student is academically positioned in comparison to the rest of the class. This is displayed in a box-and-whisker plot on the grades page. Please note that if you disable the grade average graph from displaying for students and parents, teachers will still be able to see it when they view the student’s grade page from their account.

Enabling or Disabling the Grade Average Mark

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

A student’s current grade average mark is based on all weighted and visible assessment tasks. This is a live mark that changes over time as new assessment results are added.

It is displayed at the top of a student’s grade page.

If you do not wish for Students and Parents to see the Grade Average, toggle this setting of 'OFF'.

Grade Visibility

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

The 'Restricted Visibility of Graded Due Work' drop-down defines which roles can see the published grades and written feedback for learning activities in the LMS. For example, if it’s set to 'Staff Only', this means that staff cannot choose to publish marks or written feedback to parents or students. To set the restricted visibility, navigate to Administration > Settings > LMS Policy.

In addition to selecting the restricted visibility, schools can choose the 'Default Visibility of Graded Due Work' which will be automatically populated when staff create due work. To set the default visibility, navigate to Administration > Settings > LMS Policy.

Hiding Grades Page from Parents

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

This toggle determines whether parents can see their child's due work grades and the entire grade card. Enabling will mean that parents don't have access to their child's grades or grade card. To do this, navigate to Administration > Settings > LMS Policy, and ensure 'Hide Grades Page from Parents' is toggled to 'ON'.

Calculating Overall Grades

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

Overall grades appear on a student's grade report as their 'Current Grade Average'. This can be turned on or off by the school, so this may not be visible at your school.

image.php?hash=474d8963416b7d5b287e2f168b750192cc8cc28f

This average is calculated based on a student's marks across all weighted assessments in a subject.

NOTE: A student's current grade average can vary depending on the audience viewing the student's grade report. This is based on the mark visibility of a piece of due work. So, if a published piece of due work is visible to staff and students, but not parents, then it is likely the current grade average will appear differently for teachers and students, than it will to parents.

The mark type of an assessment determines how the overall grade is calculated.

Percentage & Total Mark

Percentage & total mark mark types use the percentage mark to calculate a student's overall grade. So, if a student receives a total mark of 5/10, this is converted into a percentage (50%) in order to determine the overall grade. The examples in the table below are calculated using the following overall grade scale.

Mark Type Student Grade on Assessment How is it converted?

Overall Grade

Percentage 63% 63% (stays the same) B
Total Mark 5/10 50% C+

Letter Grade

The letter grade mark type is calculated in a different way and will depend on the grade scale selected on an individual assessment task AND the overall grade scale used by your school to calculate a student's overall grade.

In order to calculate the overall grade, the student's assessment is converted to the normalised grade. A normalised grade is usually the average of the grade range. This is set up by your school, so could vary. An example of the normalised grade scale set up in the Admin system is displayed below, in this case the normalised grade is the average mark of the grade range. So, if a student receives a letter grade of C, using the below grade scale, the mark that will be used to determine the student's overall grade will be the normalised grade of 45. This is regardless of whether the student received an original mark of 40 or an original mark of 49.

Mark Blurring

Are you sure you want to remove this component?

Teachers should be wary of using letter grades because mark blurring can occur. Mark blurring is the process of taking a high resolution grade, such as a percentage, then reducing it to a range (such as those used in the letter grade mark type) and then attempting to make it high resolution and precise again using a more refined grade scale for the overall grade.

For example, a student receives 90% on an assessment task. The mark type on the task is set to letter grade and a Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory grade scale is used (like the one below). The student's grade is then returned as a result of Satisfactory on their grade report.

image.php?hash=d3dc034f2d563d1333a53b9b1c5f929e8f6a9c83

Now, in order to calculate their overall grade, the normalised grade of this scale is used. In this case, a Satisfactory result is normalised to 75%.

image.php?hash=bd4834f85710a5ef66b0261e1edb5cd2e3f9ca62

So, instead of the student's overall grade being calculated based on the original percentage score of 90%, the use of the letter grade mark type means the student's overall grade is calculated using the normalised grade of 75%.  This is mark blurring.

Mark blurring is particularly problematic when the letter grade mark type selected at the assessment level is less refined than the overall grade scale used to produce the overall grade. For this reason, we generally recommend using the percentage or total mark mark types for assessment tasks.
