The Chat component is a great tool to engage users in a synchronous online discussion. The Chat component is developed to only be accessible for Students when a Teacher is online. This means that when a teacher is offline, students can access the chat history but cannot post new messages into the component. This ensures that conversations can be closely monitored you will find the following information.

Adding the Chat Component

1. To add the component to your page, select the '+' button at the top of your page.

2. Select the 'Collaboration' tab.

3. Drag and drop the component to the desired location.

Using chat on a student group homepage

To activate the chat you can select the text 'Activate the chat'.

Alternatively, you can select the 'Settings' cog, and use the drop-down menu to activate the chat, selecting 'Active' and then 'Update'.

Once you have completed your 'chat' session, you can make the chat inactive by unlocking your page, selecting the 'Settings' cog, and using the drop-down menu to select 'Inactive', and selecting 'Update'.

When a chat is set to 'Inactive', users can choose to view previous chat, by selecting 'View the chat archive'.

NOTE: When there is no Teacher active on the page, the chat will automatically switch to 'Inactive'. However, as a page does not automatically update, if a user is on the page before the Teacher leaves, they will still be able to comment on the chat. Once they have commented, the page will refresh, causing the chat to no longer be active for that user.

1. Unlock your page.

2. Select the 'Settings' cog on the component.

3. Select 'Collapse Content' if you wish the component to be collapsed.

4. Select 'Update' to save changes.

 

 

NOTE: Users can open the component using the drop-down arrow.

Activate Chat

1. Select the 'Settings' cog on the component.

2. Select 'State' and change to Active or,

3. Select 'Activate the Chat' in the component 

 

View Chat archive

1. Select 'View the Chat Archive' in the component
